6 Days. 5 Countries. One Mission — Secure India’s Future Before The World Changes Again
Tomorrow morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will board a plane and not stop for six days. By May 20, he will have met kings, prime ministers, and business titans across three continents — all in the service of one urgent goal: India’s energy security and economic survival in a world spinning out of control.
Why This Tour Cannot Wait
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to begin a major five-nation foreign tour from May 15 to 20, covering the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy at a time when global energy markets remain under pressure because of tensions in West Asia and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The visit is being seen as an important diplomatic push focused on energy security, trade, investment and strategic partnerships as India looks to protect its economic interests amid global uncertainty.

With Brent crude hovering near $113 per barrel, the Indian rupee at an all-time low of ₹95.32 per dollar, and FII outflows crossing $20 billion in 2026 alone — this is not a routine diplomatic visit. This is a rescue mission for India’s economy.
Stop 1 — Abu Dhabi, UAE (May 15): The Oil Lifeline
On May 15, the prime minister will arrive in the UAE to meet President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The two leaders will hold discussions on strengthening bilateral relations and advance the bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Notably, UAE remains India’s third largest trade partner and its seventh largest source of investment. Over 4.5 million Indians stay there.
The UAE recently exited OPEC+, making direct bilateral energy ties vital for India at a time when the Strait of Hormuz crisis has disrupted traditional oil supply routes. A new long-term oil supply agreement with Abu Dhabi could be the single most consequential outcome of this entire six-day tour.
Stop 2 — Netherlands (May 15–17): The Chip India Desperately Needs
PM Modi will arrive in the Netherlands from May 15 to 17 at the invitation of Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. During the visit, PM Modi will meet Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima and hold official talks with Prime Minister Rob Jetten. The visit will help deepen cooperation in sectors such as defence, security, semiconductors, green hydrogen, innovation and water management. The Netherlands remains one of India’s largest trade destinations in Europe, with bilateral trade reaching USD 27.8 billion in 2024-25 and cumulative Dutch FDI in India touching USD 55.6 billion.
The semiconductor angle is the story within the story. New Delhi has long been interested in acquiring lithography machines manufactured by the Dutch company ASML, which are critical for semiconductor production. ASML makes the world’s only EUV lithography machines — without which advanced chips cannot be manufactured. India getting access to ASML technology would be a game-changer for its semiconductor ambitions under the India Semiconductor Mission.
Stop 3 — Sweden (May 17–18): Europe’s Clean Tech Powerhouse
Sweden’s importance to India has increased due to the India-EU Free Trade Agreement announced in January 2026, which is expected to become operational in early 2027. PM Modi and Prime Minister Kristersson are expected to jointly address the European Round Table for Industry along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The forum brings together leading pan-European business leaders and is expected to focus on industrial cooperation, innovation and investment opportunities.
Standing beside the President of the European Commission at a pan-European business leaders forum is not a small moment — it signals that India is now a core partner in Europe’s industrial future.
Stop 4 — Norway & The Nordic Summit (May 18–19): 43 Years in the Making
PM Modi will visit Norway from May 18 to 19 for the 3rd India-Nordic Summit and bilateral engagements. This will be his first visit to Norway and the first Prime Ministerial visit from India to the country in 43 years. During the visit, PM Modi will meet Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja and hold talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
The 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo on May 19 will bring together the Prime Ministers of Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden — a rare gathering of all five Nordic nations with India’s Prime Minister. The Summit will impart a more strategic dimension to India’s relationship with Nordic countries, especially in technology, green transition, renewable energy, sustainability, blue economy, defence, space and the Arctic.
Norway’s sovereign wealth fund — the world’s largest — already holds investments worth nearly USD 28 billion in Indian capital markets. Deepening this relationship could unlock billions more in patient, long-term capital for Indian infrastructure.
Stop 5 — Italy, Rome (May 19–20): Fast-Tracking The India-EU FTA
The final leg sees PM Modi in Rome for a standalone bilateral meeting with PM Giorgia Meloni. The agenda: fast-tracking the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and deepening defence co-production.
Bilateral trade between India and Italy reached USD 16.77 billion in 2025, while cumulative Italian FDI in India stood at USD 3.66 billion. Talks are expected to focus on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, defence cooperation, clean energy, technology and investment under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029.
The India-EU FTA — if fast-tracked — would be the biggest trade deal India has signed in history, opening a market of 450 million European consumers to Indian goods and services.

What India Stands to Gain
If PM Modi returns home on May 20 with even half of what is on the agenda — a UAE oil deal, ASML chip access, an India-EU FTA timeline, and Nordic green hydrogen partnerships — it would represent one of the most productive diplomatic weeks in independent India’s history.
From Abu Dhabi’s critical oil corridors to the semiconductor and green technology hubs of Europe, the six-day outreach is expected to shape India’s economic and strategic positioning amid deep geopolitical turbulence and supply chain disruptions.

The world is being reorganised. PM Modi is making sure India is at the table — not on the menu.
