New Delhi: A 54-year-old Manipuri guitarist and music teacher died after allegedly being brutally assaulted by a group of men outside his rented residence in southeast Delhi’s Kilokari village late Sunday night, police said.
The incident has triggered concern over public safety and the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault. Police have arrested seven men and detained a 15-year-old boy in connection with the case.
The victim, Vikram Singh Chongtham, was reportedly attacked after he objected to a commotion allegedly involving workers from two nearby dhabas. According to people familiar with the incident, an argument escalated into a violent confrontation outside Chongtham’s residence.
Chongtham sustained serious injuries in the assault and later succumbed to them. Police subsequently launched an investigation into the incident and began identifying those allegedly involved.
A Music Teacher Who Built a Life in Delhi
Chongtham, a well-known guitarist from Manipur, had lived and worked in Delhi for nearly 17 years. He earned a living as a private music teacher and was known among students and members of the local music community for his work as a guitarist.
He lived with his wife, Joshna Chongtham, 50, and their 20-year-old son, Yaiphaba Chongtham, in a third-floor rented flat in Kilokari, an area under the jurisdiction of the Sunlight Colony police station.
The assault has left his family and acquaintances devastated, as a long-standing dispute over a neighbourhood disturbance allegedly turned into a deadly attack.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the incident, Delhi Police arrested seven adult suspects and apprehended a 15-year-old minor in connection with the alleged killing. Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the confrontation, the exact sequence of events and the individual roles of those accused.
Police are also expected to examine witness statements and other available evidence to establish what happened immediately before and during the assault.
The motive and precise circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.
The death of Chongtham has also raised fresh questions about the safety of residents in densely populated neighbourhoods and the dangers of seemingly minor disputes escalating into fatal violence.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to establish the full chain of events and determine accountability for the death of the Manipuri musician.
