New Delhi, October 2, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, who is recovering after being seriously injured during a mid-air attack aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
During the conversation, Prime Minister Modi praised Machchhar for his courage, presence of mind and determination during the emergency. He also wished the pilot a speedy recovery.
Pilot Injured During Flight
The incident reportedly occurred aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 while the aircraft was travelling from Dubai towards Tel Aviv.
According to reports, Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot inside the cockpit. The aircraft subsequently entered a dangerous descent, creating an emergency situation for the passengers and crew.
Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar managed to reach the cockpit door and open it. This allowed passengers and crew members to enter the cockpit and intervene.
Two reserve pilots who were travelling as passengers also helped operate the aircraft.
Aircraft Lands Safely
Following the intervention, the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.
The incident could have resulted in a much more serious outcome, but the actions of the injured pilot, passengers, crew members and other pilots helped bring the aircraft under control.
PM Modi Praises Captain Machchhar
During his conversation with the pilot, Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for Machchhar’s courage and quick decision-making.
The Prime Minister also expressed concern for his health and wished him a fast recovery.
Machchhar’s actions have received considerable attention in India, with many people describing him as a hero for his role during the emergency.
Captain Recalls the Ordeal
During the conversation, Machchhar reportedly explained that he realised the aircraft was descending while he was injured inside the cockpit.
Despite his condition, he understood that immediate action was necessary. He managed to gather enough strength to open the cockpit door, enabling others to enter and assist.
The pilot also spoke about how his faith helped him remain focused during the frightening situation.
