₹1.94 Lakh Crore in One Month: India’s GST Collections Jump 13.9% in June — Economy Sending All the Right Signals

-

India’s economy is sending a clear message through its tax collections — and the message is confident. India’s gross GST collections reached ₹1,94,812 crore in June 2026, registering a 13.9% year-on-year growth over ₹1,71,105 crore collected in June 2025. The figure places India just one strong month away from the psychological ₹2 lakh crore monthly milestone — a number that would have been unimaginable when GST was launched in 2017.

The growth was primarily driven by a substantial increase in import revenues. Gross domestic revenue grew by 6.5% to ₹1,34,774 crore, while revenue from imports surged 34.6% to ₹60,038 crore. The import revenue surge tells a specific story: India is importing more — raw materials, components, capital goods — because its manufacturing sector is expanding and its consumer demand is healthy.

After accounting for refunds, the net GST revenue saw an 11.2% year-on-year increase, totalling ₹1,62,377 crore.

Among states, Uttar Pradesh and Assam saw two of the strongest growths at 19% and 17% respectively. Punjab, Gujarat, and Maharashtra posted growths of 14%, 12%, and 9%. UP’s 19% growth is particularly significant — it reflects the economic transformation of India’s most populous state under consistent infrastructure investment.

On a cumulative basis, gross GST collections for the April–June period of FY27 reached ₹6,31,699 crore — a rise of 8.4% over the corresponding period last year.

For the Sensex, which closed at 77,502 yesterday, and for the RBI which holds rates at 5.25%, these GST numbers provide the most direct evidence available that India’s economic fundamentals remain strong even as global uncertainty from the West Asia conflict, US tariffs, and Chinese competition creates headwinds. A government collecting nearly ₹2 lakh crore per month in a single indirect tax has the fiscal firepower to absorb shocks, invest in infrastructure, and support growth simultaneously.

India’s GST story, which began with a complex, fumbling rollout in 2017, has become one of the great quiet success stories of modern economic policy.
