Some coincidences are too perfect to be just coincidences. On June 23, 2007, a 20-year-old boy from Nagpur named Rohit Gurunath Sharma walked out to represent India in an ODI against Ireland for the first time. Nineteen years later, on June 23, 2026, that same man — now retired from T20 internationals, a two-time World Cup winning captain, and the holder of the highest individual ODI score in the history of the game — walked into the Rashtrapati Bhavan and received the Padma Shri from President Droupadi Murmu. The date was identical. The journey between those two moments is one of the great stories of Indian sport.

The Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan
On June 23, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Padma Awards 2026 during the second Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, honouring 65 eminent personalities across a range of fields. The ceremony included two Padma Vibhushan, seven Padma Bhushan and 56 Padma Shri awards. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, and Home Minister Amit Shah graced the occasion.
Rohit Sharma walked in humility to the President as the prestigious attendees cheered him. He was all smiles after receiving the honour. The man who has scored 11,720 ODI runs, hit three double centuries, and won two World Cups — visibly moved by a ceremony in which the nation formally said: we see what you did, and we are grateful.
Other notable recipients at the ceremony included actor R Madhavan and legendary singer Alka Yagnik for Padma Shri. Mammootty — one of Malayalam cinema’s greatest legends — received the Padma Bhushan, accompanied by his son Dulquer Salmaan. Indian tennis great Vijay Amritraj was honoured with the Padma Bhushan. Former India women’s hockey team captain Savita Punia, dubbed the Great Wall of India, was also awarded the Padma Shri.
What Rohit Built in 19 Years
The Padma Shri celebrates a career that redefined what an Indian batsman could look like at the top of the order. Rohit holds multiple world records, including the highest individual ODI score of 264 and the feat of scoring three double centuries in ODIs. Under his leadership, India’s men’s team clinched the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title in Barbados and the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai.
Rohit amassed 597 runs in the 2023 ODI World Cup — second only to Virat Kohli — and topped the scoring charts in the 2019 ODI World Cup with a record five centuries and 648 runs in nine innings.
But numbers alone do not capture what Rohit Sharma meant to Indian cricket. He was the captain who finally ended the World Cup drought. He was the opener who made 264 against Sri Lanka and then looked almost confused by the fuss. He was the leader who managed the careers of Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, and a generation of younger players with a quiet, undemonstrative authority that won him enormous respect inside the dressing room.
